Japan Printing Develops Packaging Films for Plant Raw Materials

Dainippon Printing Co., Ltd. has developed Bio Mathic PET, a packaging film made from plants, which will be mass-produced. In addition to replacing some of the raw materials with petroleum bioethanol from sugar cane, and reducing the amount of oil used, it also reduces manufacturing costs, and also reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during incineration. It is estimated that it will achieve sales of 10 billion yen in 2015.

Bio Mathic PET replaced ethylene glycol, which is about 30% of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film raw material, with petroleum glycol made from sugar cane, and reduced the amount of oil used. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted during incineration is also reduced by 2 to 30%. With the same processing adaptability and heat resistance as the original product, it is suitable for packaging materials such as detergents and other replacement packaging bags and instant foods.

Due to the high price of packaging materials using biomass plastics, which is about 1.5 to 2 times that of the original products, the company has not been officially produced before. Since Bio Mathic PET successfully reduced the cost of manufacturing thin films to 1.2 to 1.3 times that of the original product, many companies that accepted the supply of samples expressed their desire to adopt it, so the company decided to conduct mass production.

The price varies according to the performance parameters of the packaging materials, and it is said that the lowest value can be reduced to less than 1.1 times the original product. With the increasing demand for environmentally friendly films, the company plans to replace PET films supplied to companies such as food, beverages and daily necessities with Bio Mathic PET. In the future, we will strive to further increase the product lineup of plant-derived packaging materials while further reducing costs.
